The Fourth Topical Workshop on Modern Aspects in Nuclear Structure will take place in Bormio, Italy, from 19 to 24 February 2018. The meeting is jointly organized by Università degli Studi di Milano and Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (sez. Milano), with the local organizers Angela Bracco, Franco Camera, Gianluca Colò and Silvia Leoni. It is sponsored by Università degli Studi di Milano, Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare and by the companies CAEN, AMETEK/ORTEC, SAINT-GOBAIN and SCIONIX.
Over 150 participants from Europe, America, Asia and Africa with more than 30% of PhD students and post-Doctoral researchers are ready to discuss their late results and future plans concerning the forefront studies of nuclear structure, either far from stability or in exotic configurations. The International Advisory Committee has suggested many active speakers that will surely stimulate the interest of the participants. Satellite meetings, very useful and enlightening for the ongoing and planned work, are planned. They focus on theory, experiments at ILL (Grenoble), at SPES at LNL (Legnaro) and on developments within the PARIS collaboration (which is building a device to be used at several laboratories). Researchers conducting experimental and theoretical work at the major laboratories (Argonne, MSU, ISOLDE/CERN, LNL, LNS, FAIR-GSI, GANIL, RCNP, RIKEN, TRIUMF, iTHEMBA, ELI-NP, JLAB, JYFL) are scheduled to deliver presentations showing results and planned work of high interest on the topics of shell structure, collective excitations, interactions in nuclei, equation of state, reaction mechanisms and nucleosynthesis in stars. Why so much excitement in this field? The understanding of the origin of the elements, one of the ten central questions in physics, is as hard as assembling a very complex mosaic in which many pieces are needed and have to be built with research at the cutting edge of technology, in different nuclear physics laboratories. We all know that each piece of research is interesting "per se" and for its relations with the others.
Following the tradition of previous editions, during the Conference Dinner, on Saturday 24th, the two best talks of young speakers will be rewarded with cash prizes kindly offered by the sponsor CAEN.
